Mulching & Trimming Tips

Benefits to Mulching: Applying mulch 3" thick around trees and shrubs reduces weed infestation and increases water retention.

Hedge Trimming: The best time to trim any plant specimen is when it is not blooming. Cooler weather is the best option for major trimming due to lack of heat stress and drought conditions.

Healthy Lawn Care Tips

Mowing Frequency: The first mowing of the season should come when grass is 3 inches high.

  • Weekly or more frequently as needed in March-October
  • As needed in November-February.
  • Never cut grass more than 1/3 of its length at once. Even an overgrown lawn should be trimmed by only 1/3 at a time; space follow-up trims a few days apart to reach the best length.

Here are optimal heights for the most common species:

Grass Species

Grass Type

Recommended Length

Bermuda Grass

Warm Season 1 to 2 inches

Centipede Grass

Warm Season 1 1/2 to 2 1/2

Zoysia Grass

Warm Season 1 to 2 inches

Fescue

Cold Season 1 1/2 to 2 1/2

Healthy, thick grass resists weeds, insects, disease and thatch. It's also less susceptible to heat stress and drought. Keep your grass at its optimal height to save you money now by reducing water consumption and later with less lawn repairs.
